Audio Description

Audio Description is a service provided to people who are blind or have low vision in theatres, cinemas, television, museums, art galleries, and heritage sites.

Working from a script, the most important visual details of a story, artwork or location are described to blind and low-vision users, to achieve an equity of experience. The service is delivered through a recorded audio track or a live radio feed.

In 2019, I was trained as a describer by Roz Chalmers OBE and Vocaleyes, the leading provider of AD in London’s West End, and have since provided the service to, among others, the National Theatre, Old Vic, Royal Court, Donmar Warehouse and Shakespeare’s Globe. After this, I branched out into film and television, working on feature film releases and with the major streaming platforms: Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime, Sky, NBC Universal, and Mubi.

I’ve organised ongoing development training for describers with Vocaleyes and the Audio Description Association, and have helped to facilitate AD and awareness training for cultural organisations.

I’m particularly interested in the accessibility of new media and have worked on virtual reality experiences and social media.
